Amarillo City Council renames Medical Center Park to honor former City Manager John Ward

In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the Amarillo City Council approved a resolution to rename Medical Center Park in honor of former City Manager John Ward. The park will now be known as John Ward Memorial Park, commemorating Ward’s long-standing service and contributions to the city.

Ward, who served as city manager from 1983 to 2005, passed away in March of last year. Under his leadership, Amarillo underwent significant development, adding crucial infrastructure and amenities that shaped the city’s future.

A Legacy of Growth and Development

According to Michael Kashuba, Director of Parks and Recreation, Ward’s tenure saw the addition of three new libraries, a downtown bus terminal, six new parks, two new golf courses, and a tennis center. His leadership also brought police and court buildings, three new fire stations, a fire administration building, and a youth baseball complex.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Ward played a crucial role in the formation of the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation, which continues to drive economic growth in the region. He also oversaw a major renovation of the airport terminal, helped guarantee the city’s water supply for 300 years, initiated the 911 emergency communications district, and led the expansion of the Amarillo Zoo. Additionally, his tenure saw the construction and subsequent sale of Northwest Texas Hospital and the establishment of Center City, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing downtown Amarillo.

A Meaningful Tribute

The decision to rename Medical Center Park was recommended by the Parks and Recreation Department board following a public hearing on January 15. During this meeting, Ward’s wife shared personal stories about the significance of the park to both her and her late husband. Her heartfelt testimony reinforced the idea that the renaming would be a fitting tribute.

On Tuesday, after the council’s unanimous approval, Ward’s family and friends were invited to the front of the chamber, where Councilmember Place 4 Les Simpson presented a commemorative plaque to Mrs. Ward. The gesture underscored the city's deep appreciation for Ward’s dedication and lasting impact.

A Lasting Impact on Amarillo

The newly named John Ward Memorial Park will stand as a testament to Ward’s legacy and the transformation Amarillo underwent during his leadership. His influence is still felt today, from the city’s parks and libraries to its economic and emergency infrastructure.

With the official renaming now in place, Amarillo ensures that future generations will recognize and remember the contributions of a leader who helped shape the community into what it is today.
